Norman Lewis knew Sicily well and this account of the history of the Sicilian Mafia from the time of the American landings in 1944 to the early 1960s is detailed and highly readable. Lewis was one of the best writers of his generation and he keeps a balance between history and story telling that serves to make the facts of the mafia control of the island grimly fascinating.
If you want to understand how the mafia has maintained its hold, and also get some idea of why that hold has weakened in the past 40 years this is an excellent place to start
