Excerpt from The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England, Begun in the Year 1641, Vol. 1: With the Precedent Passages, and Actions, That Contributed Thereunto, and the Happy End, and Conclusion Thereof by the King's Blessed Restoration, and Return Upon the 29th of May, in the Year 1660 However, all things of this Nature mufi' be fub mitred, as this is, with great deference to the judgment of the equal Reader; who Will meet, in his progrefs through this work, with many Paf lages, that, he will judge, may difoblige the Pofie rity of even well meaning Men in thole days; much more then of fuch as were crafty, cunning, and wicked enough to defign the mifchiefs that enlued: But he filall meet' with none of Malice, nor any but fuch as the Author, upon his belt information, took to be Impartially true. He could not be igno rant of the Rules of a good Hifiorian (which, Cicero lays, are fuel: foundations, that they are known to every body) T fiat 121: [bould Not dare to jpealz any Fol/hood, and [bould dare to [peak any T rut/z. And we doubt not, but through the whole progrefs of this Hil'tory, he will be found to 'have given no occafion of fufpefiing his writings guilty of partial favor, or wy'ufl enmity; and we hope, that the reprefenting the Truth, without any mixture of private Pallion or Animofity, will be [0 far from giving ofience to any Ingenuous Man of this time, that it will he received rather as an Infiruaion to the prefent Age, than a Reproach upon the lafi.
