McKinley, a malamute, head dog of the Steamboat Springs, Colorado, pack, is challenged by a she-wolf. His "human pup" Jack spots Lupin, who is scornful of the dog pack's dependence upon mankind, and plans to run off for and adventure with the she-wolf. McKinley can't allow his "pup" to do that, but he must contend with Lupin's message for dogs to free themselves and join the wolves in the wild.
