The French horn came on the scene in Handel's Water Music, and by Mozart's time, it had developed into a fully-fledged solo instrument. The intermediate steps are a bit obscure, partly because the natural valveless horn is a fiendishly difficult instrument to play, its tone modulated by the hand controlling the flow of air through the bell.
