As a child, Luke's mother often tells him the story of the Dumb House, an experiment on newborn babies raised in silence, designed to test the innateness of language. As Luke grows up, his interest in language and the delicate balance of life and death leads to amateur dissections of small animals - tiny hearts revealed still pumping, as life trickles away. Twisted, unsettling, and Frankensienish, this book is a deep look into the mind of a severely demented person. It is not a book I can classify as light reading, Nor was it enjoyable. A disturbing read, this book is not for everyone. The main character is sociopathic and has no remorse for anything he does. He, in his missguided mind, excuses all his actions because of a scientific project he thinks he is doing. The author takes the reader on a grim and dark journey, but does it better than other writers.
