Excerpt from The Dictionary of Trade Products: Manufacturing and Technical Terms, Moneys, Weights, and Measures of All Countries Cheap works of ready reference are a necessity of the present day, and this one I have endeavoured to make as complete as possible. My long career as a journalist and author of sixty years' experience has afforded me many facilities for acquiring special knowledge on Commerce and Finance. Few, perhaps, have contributed so largely to technical literature and popular encyclopaedias as I have done, and this, added to an official connection with all the great International Exhibitions which have been held during the last forty years, combined with important official Museum duties, has given me many advantages. That this work has proved useful is evident from the large sale it has had, and its extensive employment in adding new words to the great Dictionaries of America and Europe. The vast expansion of Commerce, and the introduction of new pro ducts and trades since the work was first published, have, however, rendered additions necessary. Without interfering with the body of the work, I have thought that an Appendix would bring it up to date, by supplementing the few statistics introduced, correcting the fluctuating exchange value of coins in circulation, such as rupees, dollars, taels.
