Excerpt from The Dictionary of Love: Containing a Definition of All the Terms Used in the History of the Tender Passion, With Rare Quotations From the Ancient and Modern Poets of All Nations AS the author has not been compelled to write the book to get bread, and as he has enjoyed the amiable company of a contented stomach dur ing the whole time he has been engaged upon it, he has reason to hope that the work is free from the immorality of ill-nature, and from the bad example and worse manners of fault-finding. He has the peculiarity to believe that this world, instead of being so bad as many paint it, is the best one there is this side of eternity, and ought, therefore, tobe respected and enjoyed in a rational and thankful manner. But, while thus inclined to laugh with the general happiness of nature, it will be found that he is not the less disposed to frown at immorality and vice. He does not allow himself to entertain a doubt that this Dic tionary will be diligently studied by many thousands of earnest and de voted pupils. Being the only book of the kind in existence, he claims for it at once the credit of being a standard authority, which 'he may do without presumption on his own part, as he has consulted the most emi nent authors of all ages and of nearly all nations, who have written upon the delicate subject.
