The Classical Piano Concerto series from the Hyperion label, largely with Howard Shelley playing and conducting (here, he leads the London Mozart Players), has been artistically and commercially successful, bringing forth music that has been heard on recordings only in wan academic readings, if at all. These four keyboard concertos by Georg Benda offer good examples of the valuable work Shelley has been doing. They are undated here but probably were originally written for harpsichord and probably came from the 1750s or 1760s. Nevertheless, they do not suffer from piano performances. All four concertos are in the three-movement Italianate form that was becoming standard. The outer movements are compact and might be taken for Haydn had he written more concertos; the three minor-key concertos may reflect the influence of the German Sturm und Drang trend.
