Rutter, for those unfamiliar with him, is the sunny optimist of contemporary British choral music. Creditable with a strong knowledge of British religious poetry and gifted with an instinct for how to set it evocatively, he has written a large amount of mostly religious music that can be charged with false sentimentality but defended against that charge on the grounds of the music's craft and economy.
