Excerpt from The Building of the Intellect: A Contribution Towards Scientific Method in Education IN the following pages I have attempted a brief abstract of some of the leading thought on Education. I have sought not so much to give expres sion to any views of my own, as to present a systematic exposition of such opinions as are most deserving of attention in the works of others. Not to diminish the force or authority of such opinions, I have thought it desirable to quote the arguments and conclusions of my authors literally, rather than convey them in language of my own. Education being now regarded as a question of such vital importance, and opinions differing so widely as to its method, character and scope, a summary of the views of those best qualified as guides and teachers cannot fail to be of service to us in our efforts to arrive at some thing like unanimity of opinion. In view of the promise of modern psycho logical inquiry to give Education a scientific basis, I have treated mental phenomena as the only sure guide to sound educational method. Every admission of new data, and verification of old, being an acquisition to the science they concern, I have ventured to submit for the approval of my readers several conclusions at which I have arrived, on a consideration' of the parallel presented by the mental evolution of the individual and the mental evolution of the species. Though I have been careful not to disregard the advantages of Education as directed to the attainment of scholarship, I have preferred to treat it primarily as an instrument in the for mation of character. I have avoided detail, not only with the object of confining my remarks within mode rate limits, but also because I consider that, for the general reader - for whom the present work is intended - such a subject should be treated only in its general bearings. With such limitations, I have endeavoured to present a summary of views on the subject of Education that may prove serviceable to those entrusted with the care of the young.
