Jane Goodall and Douglas Abrams explore one of the most sought after and least understood elements of human nature: hope. Drawing on decades of work that has helped expand our understanding of what it means to be human and what we all need to do to help build a better world, the book touches on vital questions, including: How do we stay hopeful when everything seems hopeless? How do we cultivate hope in our children? What is the relationship between hope and action? While discussing the experiences that shaped her discoveries and beliefs, Jane tells the story of how she became a messenger of hope, from living through World War II to her years in Gombe to realizing she had to leave the forest to travel the world in her role as an advocate for environmental justice.

Jane Goodall and Doug Abrams sat down for a series of quiet, thoughtful and inspiring conversations about the relevancy of hope in our times. They usually chatted over coffee (or a dram of whisky) in a comfy cabin set in the woods of the Netherlands. More specifically, they were discussing for this book, why Jane Goodall maintains genuine (not endless) hope for humanity and our planet in these difficult times. We, the readers, are in the room, as audience to these candid talks.
Jane outlined four main reasons with many stories from her life and personal experience to show how and why they'd influenced her belief in hope.
Ironically, these lovely, enlightening sessions took place mostly in the autumn of 2019, ending in December, just before the pandemic. Their final session, to talk about Jane's life and how she evolved to become global ambassador for peace and the environment, was delayed. They finally "met" on Zoom (of course) with Jane at her home in London, and Doug at his home in California.
This was the perfect book to keep on my nightstand to read before bed. I'd have loved for them to continue their conversations forever!
