My only quarrel with this novel is the dust jacket, which has the look of kiddie-lit. Which the book is not. Light, often very funny, but a deft handling of mature themes, it brings back Jim from the author' former novel, Boy Jim, placing him in a beautifully reconstructed pre-WWII North Carolina farming environment. Jim, now a high school senior, has fallen in love--literally at first sight--with Chrissie. What's the matter? You find out, little by little, that Chrissie is half Cherokee (no problem here), but regarded as the property of the son of the man upon whom Chrissie and her mom rely for a roof. Bucky is in the navy and warns Jim off. Bucky's ship is at Pearl Harbor, and when he comes back in a box, Jim has a bit of guilt to manage. Poverty, family complications, Chrissie's love for a father on the run from the law, wonderful three-dimensional characters, and a charming sub-plot involving one of Jim's three bachelor uncles, paint a portrait of innocence in face of the human condition. Not to be missed.
