The Battle of China is the sixth of seven documentaries from the Why We Fight series directed by Frank Capra. Released between 1942 and 1945, these films were shown to American military personnel for instructional purposes; they also served as American propaganda during World War II. This film portrays Japanese aggression in China and China's response to this aggression. Topics covered include an overview of Chinese history and culture, Sun Yat-sen, the invasion of Manchuria, the bombing of Shanghai, the rape of Nanjing, the moving of the capital to Chungking, Claire Chennault and the Flying Tigers, the Burma Road, the Battle of Changsha, General Joseph Stilwell, Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, and Madame Chiang Kai-shek speaking to the United States Congress. We also learn how a small Japanese army was able to defeat the large population of China: Japan was unified, but China was fragmented. The film capably develops the themes of China: history, land, and people. I especially enjoyed the soundtrack, too. The film contains disturbing images of dead and wounded children as well as executions of Chinese civilians and people being buried alive; parents and teachers should use caution if they desire to show this to their children or students, respectively. Still, The Battle of China is a good overview of the early years of World War II in Asia.
