Michael J. Bugeja's book has three sections. The first deals with genres of poetry, the second with tools of the trade (voice, line, stanza...), and the third with set forms of poetry. While the latter two sections are well done, for me the book's strength is in the first section. Looking at poetry in terms of genre (love poetry, political poetry, occasion poetry...) was a new way of viewing things and is a good way to stimulate ideas for poems. In fact, Bugeja's whole book is designed to get you writing. Each chapter contains a discussion of the topic, followed by a mini-anthology of poems that illustrate that topic, and culminating in exercises encouraging you to put your new-found knowledge into practice. These exercises are presented in three levels so that you can return to the book several times, each time tackling a new level. My first time through I came away with enough ideas to keep me busy writing for a long time to come. This book is a good basic text and a sure relief for writer's block.
