For, when a torrent of deftruclion wafted the land, in the times of anarchy and rebellion, the fbns of that nobleman made a brave ftand againft the enemy; one of whom fell, fighting for his religion religion and his country, in the battle of Lisc Aroll, where three of his brothers alfo lignalized themfelves; and the youngeft (afterwards Lord Shannon) narrowly efcaped being flain, in a magnanimous and fuccefs-ful attempt to recover his brother's body, with his horfe and arms, from the enemy. It would, my Lord, be tedious to mention the particular actions of your noble ancef-tor, the firft Earl of Orrery, in this country. The feveral battles he fought in it, were fb many defeats given to the Irish; in which, though always victorious, he charged at the head of fingle troops, in comparifon of an army on the enemy's fide. In imitation of his father, he alfo founded towns, and planted English colonies in this county, of which Charleville and Castle- Mar Tvr are remaining inftances. Thefe were, my Lord, actions truly noble, and truths that will long fhine in the Irish annals.
