This book is an indispensable masterpiece, the single greatest guide to American cinema. It contains a brief essay on all the major (and many of the minor) directors, tells you which of their works are more important and ranks the top 50 or so films of each year from 1929 to 1968 in order of quality!! It is, needless to say, highly opinionated, and though no one will agree with all of its opinions, they are carefully considered, and it is instructive to argue with them. The only real shortcoming of the book is that Sarris never updated it past '68. Let the reader do that for herself!
