In the case of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 in F minor and the Symphony No. 5 in E minor, released in 2019 on the Mariinsky label, Gergiev favors what is best described as a hyper-Romantic approach, with extremes of dynamics, tempos, and phrasing. Tchaikovsky's music often invites a degree of exaggeration, because his expressions and moods are typically over-the-top and self-indulgent, even by the standards of his time. Gergiev's live performances with the Mariinsky Orchestra can be characterized as subjective and highly changeable, with heavy rubato and attenuated phrases that draw out the last bit of emotion.
