The exception was the heavily Western-oriented Sergey Taneyev, who wrote a good deal of chamber music and arguably matched his model, the Tchaikovsky Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 50, in his Piano Trio in D major, Op. 22, of 1907. The Leonore Piano Trio, whose pianist is Tim Horton, delivers a strong performance that balances Taneyev's technical, somewhat wonky side with a degree of melodic beauty. Sample the second movement, with its tightly argued set of variations. The Rimsky-Korsakov, as you might expect, is a bit less persuasive, but there are tunes that let you know which composer you're listening to.
