The musicians follow the same basic plan, and all three recordings are worthwhile additions to any library of English Renaissance music. As on the earlier Salve intemerata, Carwood follows roughly the development of Tallis' career, with large Latin motets at the beginning and the sparse Protestant service music to which he adapted under the reign of Elizabeth I at the end. This is a convincing structure that brings both general styles and Tallis' own takes on them into relief. There are advantages to either album; on the earlier release you get the biggest "hit" in the latter category, If ye love me, in a wonderful performance that gives a sense of the moment when Tallis achieved real individuality within the severe Anglican style.
