Seller's Description:
Illustrated. New in New jacket. Book. 4to-over 9¾"-12" tall. First edition. 4to. 206 pp., heavily illustrated. The monumental cave complexes of the Baodingshan site at Dazu in China's Sichuan province, and their vast treasure trove of Buddhist sculpture and painting, have been little studied relative to other Buddhist cave art in China. This book reveals and explains the incredible artworks hidden in this remote site, dating from the Song dynasty and inspired by the tenets of Esoteric Buddhism. The Large Baodingshan, for example, is a horseshoe-shaped gully with carved relief walls, reminiscent of the Ajanta caves in India. Color photographs, line drawings, and a detailed text tour its features in the didactic order intended by their creators, from the Prowling Tiger and the Nine Protectors of the Law to the Oxherding Parable and the Two Licchavi Women, revealing their iconography, symbolism, and the hidden meanings in both the individual elements and overall design. The book then places these constructions within the context of an indigenous style of Buddhist sculpture that flourished in Sichuan province between the 11th and 13th centuries. New in new dustjacket, protected with a mylar cover.
