In Stories from Below the Poverty Line: Urban Lessons for Today's Mission author George D. Beukema shares stories from his life growing up as the son of an inner city minister in Ohio and from his adult life as an inner city minister in Chicago. He explains the plight of so many folks below the poverty line who are working poor - they work but don't make enough money to rise beyond their circumstances and then if they lose a job they are considered by some as "too sorry to work". Or worse, they want to work but can't because their much needed medical care cards are taken away if they have a job. Often times the help they receive is more a "hand out" than a "hand up". Folks want to be self-sufficient but in a world where 80% of the wealth belongs to 20% of the population the odds work against them.
