The Sphinx Virtuosi, formerly known as the Sphinx Chamber Players, are the performing arm of the Sphinx Organization, founded in 1996 "to help overcome the cultural stereotype of classical music, and to encourage the participation of Blacks and Latinos in the field." They have concertized widely but have not recorded until this release, which appeared in 2011. The recording gives an idea of why the Sphinx group has experienced such phenomenal success: its founder/director, Aaron P. Dworkin, received a MacArthur genius grant, and its successes have gained much wider publicity than similar efforts in many other places. Simply put, the Sphinx Virtuosi deliver the goods musically. They tend to split their performances between mainstream repertory and works by African-American and Latino composers, and so they do here with a group of lyrical string orchestra pieces that are similar in texture and pace but absolutely never drag.
