I was drawn immediately into the story that Stewart O'Nan tells about how the Larsen family and their missing daughter Kim's friends cope with her disappearance. The author takes the reader along through the emotional highs and lows as the family and friends search, deal with what they see as the lack of help from the police, and cope with the media and the community. At times, I needed to set the book aside, because the emotions were so real.
I highly recommend Songs for the Missing, and cannot wait to read more by this author.

Diffiucult story line for me
I should clarify my 2 star rating. I only rate this 2 stars simply because these types of story lines are very hard for me to deal with. I rarely tend to like them. I had the same type reaction to Lovely Bones. This was read as an ARC for BN bookclub. The story is less about the one who goes missing but focus purely on those the missing leaves behind. The writing was straightforward (always a big hit with me) and easy to read. It seemed like there were many subtle meanings behind many of the passages. I do think the author did a fabulous job of the parents reactions to a missing child. Many in the discussion felt they should have become hysterical as a response rather than numbness turning into mobilization.
