The voice, plummy and fluttering, rises out of the mists of time as though calling from another age, and so it is -- Grace Moore's music and career go back to a time when the public liked operatic-style singing and occasionally even embraced opera-based repertory, in addition to the likes of Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern featured here. There are some charming and forgotten delights on So This Is Love, such as Berlin's "My Rock-A-Bye Baby" and the hit "Listening," Moore's sweetly sung rendition of Denza's "Funiculì, Funiculà," and the soundtrack recording of "Lover, Come Back to Me" from the 1930 film New Moon. Moore's work in The Dubarry is represented on two tracks, "Without Your Love" (with Richard Crooks) and "I Give My Heart," and four numbers from The King Steps Out are here as well along with, of course, "One Night of Love" (recorded with the Metropolitan Orchestra and chorus). Berlin's "Always" is a welcome late career track from 1945, but the most pleasing aspect of this CD is the presence of arias by Hahn, Schubert, and Puccini (from Boheme and Madame Butterfly), which offer a glimpse of her work with operatic repertory. The sound is a little bass-heavy on the oldest cuts from the '20s, but the late-'30s and mid-'40s tracks are nicely balanced. There's a satisfying lack of surface noise, which is an indication that some highs have been rolled off, but this hasn't been done too obtrusively. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
