The album title comes from a gorgeous song by Ralph Vaughan Williams to a text by his wife, Ursula Wood. Vaughan Williams figures heavily in the program, but what makes the whole thing tick are the stylistic shades -- fine, it's true, but clear and convincing. The music moves in the more sumptuous direction of Stanford and Elgar, to the more folkish Britten and Warlock (and Grainger, although the unique treatment of The Three Ravens here defies classification), to the more accessible James MacMillan. Under director Paul McCreesh the choir inhabits this repertory persuasively; there's never a sense of their wanting to be back in the Renaissance, and Signum's engineers, working in the Charterhouse School Chapel in Surrey, likewise adjust beautifully with a more intimate sound suited to secular music....
