While Roman Kofman conducts with insight and sensitivity, and the Beethoven Orchester Bonn plays with subtlety and strength, they seem to miss the point of Shostakovich's Fifth and Ninth. Because for all the musical virtues of Kofman and the Beethoven Orchestra's performance, they miss the extra-musical meanings of the scores. For a performance of the Fifth to leave the listener unmoved by its searing melodies, its agonizing harmonies, and its excruciating climaxes is to miss the point of the work.
