But Kofman's Fifteenth is something special, a hard and unflinching look into the void of death that allows no respite from its searing intensity. The Fifteenth was Shostakovich's symphonic swansong, and Kofman expresses its austere and awesome ironies in a harrowing performance that nearly rivals the finest ever recorded: Mravinsky's, Kondrashin's, and, above all, Maxim Shostakovich's.
