Though not entirely a great recording, Roman Kofman and the Beethoven Orchester Bonn's coupling of Shostakovich's Third and Fifteenth is certainly one of the best discs in their cycle of the Soviet composer's symphonies. Kofman's Third is only so-so, but, then, the Third is only so-so, a ramshackled work called May Day that wanders through thickets of grinding atonality on its way to a tonal communist hymn that Kofman's solid and unimaginative reading does nothing to redeem.
