Spivakov's interpretation leans towards the tragic view of the work. Holwever, he does not strain or overemphasize this interpretation more than the score can bear. This allows the tragedy to emerge naturally. After the march-like episode of the first movement, where the initial "epigraph" motive blares out on the trombones, Spivakov keeps the tempo moderate, allowing the weight of the music to make its point about the tyranny of Soviet life.
