His neglect may be due to the fact that he doesn't quite fit the dominant historical narrative, which prizes the Spanish inflection of Palestrina's Counter Reformation clarity in the dark, transparent motets of Tomás Luís de Victoria and Alonso Lobo. The Missa Assumpsit Jesus of Vivanco heard here, by contrast, is overflowing with notes: it has a sumptuous sound that contains numerous canons and other forms of imitation, and it's written on a large scale (in this, at least, resembling Palestrina). To perform it demands both vocal power and clarity, both qualities possessed in abundance by the all-male British choir De Profundis.
