Rather, the appeal is that Gardiner, here and on the other album of a pair covering the other two Schumann symphonies, successfully transfers the virtues of his approach to a modern symphony, the London Symphony Orchestra, recorded live at the Barbican and sounding great. It's not claiming too much to say that Gardiner is one of the conductors who set in motion a reevaluation of Schumann's symphonies, which were considered poorly orchestrated when they were played with a large, undifferentiated mass of strings.
