The third volume of Graham Johnson's Schubert edition just gets better and better. Of course, he gets off to a good start merely by having mezzo soprano Ann Murray as the vocalist: Murray has an incredibly beautiful voice -- lushly rounded and warm toned -- and her interpretations of the song repertoire have been among the sweetest and deepest of the past 20 years. But as good as Murray's performance of Der Jüngling und der Tod (D. 545) is -- and she superbly captures both the terror and the consolation of the song -- her performances get better as the disc progresses. It helps that Johnson has programmed so many of Schubert's songs to texts by Mayrhofer; Schubert dearly loved his despairing friend and his sympathetic settings of Rückweg (D. 476) and Liedesend (D. 473) are wonderfully affecting in Murray's performances. Better yet, though, are her terrifying and disturbing performances of Collin's melodramatic Der Zwerg (D. 771) and her endless yearning in his heartrending Nacht und Träume (D. 827)....
