Fortunately, Johnson engaged soprano Lucia Popp to traverse those valleys with him, and the result is a disc of performances so superb, so moving, so thrilling, and so elevated that one never notices that one is in a valley. How Popp does it is a mystery. Of course, she has a wonderful voice, a voice of clarity and grace and seemingly effortless technique.
