Even tenor Ian Bostridge, a veteran Schubert interpreter if there ever was one, has taken this approach. However, as his career enters its later stages, he has rethought Die schöne Müllerin for this 2019 performance at Wigmore Hall in London, recorded for release in 2020 by Pentatone Classics. In support of his interpretation, Bostridge can, after all, cite the fact that the protagonist does commit suicide at the end and that he is as given to conversation with a brook as the winter traveler of the later cycle. Furthermore, the poems increase in seriousness and depth as the cycle proceeds, and it is here that Bostridge adds intensity instead of striving for detachment.
