Sampling around this collection of unaccompanied and accompanied choral works, you might get the impression that his music is derivative of existing styles. But two things should be noted here. First is that Williams has indeed mastered these styles, including the lofty, contemplative, unaccompanied tonal cathedral style of which there is so much on British classical charts. Second, Williams meets this accusation head-on, conceding the point and asserting that "I find most often that the choice of text will suggest a musical style and I will express myself in that framework." Given this, and given that Williams has a natural sympathy for voices, many of these pieces make a strong impact.
