I?ve heard six other recordings of sopranos, light, Mozartian, flit lightly and brightly over this music with birdlike, vibrato-y notes tossed into the airwaves like scattering scintillating droplets into the air. By comparison to this recording, they were all superficial fluff. Sure, this is a Wagnerian soprano; (heard above the level of the orchestra); sure, it?s supposed to be a heavier, louder voice. But the first time through the music, just being steeped in it, there is a profound sense of mystery, eternality, and hovering thought beyond the music and poetry. There?s passion and drama, gentleness and sweetness, there?s thundering of the Greatness Beyond, and relief and joy. Hearing it the second time through, with translated poetry in hand, more of its greater genius dawns. Orchestration is just as fabulously genius as the singing. Strauss wrote these last songs in a pensive, expansive, and reverent mood, reflecting on the closing of his long, rewarding, and successful career; the coming end of his life; and his distance from his homeland. This is reflected in the performance. Hesse?s poetry is deep; here it is sung and orchestrated as I suspect Hesse would have sung/orchestrated his poetry, if he could. All the other poetry is as rewarding and gratifyingly performed. No question ? this recording gets into the Gestalt of each piece ? not as a performance of soprano liltingly trilling through the paces with a backup orchestra, but as a Poet with a Real Voice would sing poetry, with a dynamic orchestration.
