Herbert von Karajan's magisterial early 1980s version with the Berlin Philharmonic remains the standard, but Vasily Petrenko, leading his Oslo Philharmonic, gives him strong competition here. Petrenko has conducted the work many times, with the Oslo group and with various English orchestras, and his reading has a remarkable combination of forward motion and detail, slightly quicker than usual but never rushed.
