The Return of the Kosher Pig is a fascinating book. The term "Pig" arises from the Jewish thought that being a Jew and a follower of Yeshua-Jesus is as incompatible as a kosher pig. Such a thought is beyond the realm of possibility to the Jew. To many Christians, it is equally impossible.
The book is written by a Messianic Jew and is directed at a traditional Jewish audience. The author seeks to show the development of thought about the Messiah throughout the history of Jewish writings, from the Torah, the Talmud, and almost 2000 years of Rabbinic thought.
Although an understanding of Hebrew would be valuable to the reader, almost all selections quoted from original Hebrew or Aramaic sources are translated into English. Quotations from the Christian New Testament include a Hebrew translation as well.
The book can also be an introduction to Jewish Rabbinic writings for the Christian. This reviewer is an evangelical Protestant, with substantial Hebrew Bible study, who discovered the previously unrealized depth of Jewish thought to be amazing and enlightening.
Most Christians are unfamiliar with Talmudic and Rabbinic thought. Although not openly taught in the Christian Church, most Christians assume the default understanding that Jewish thought was frozen after the time of Yeshua-Jesus and remains essentially the same today. Such is not the case, and this book will open the eyes of any Christian seeking a greater understanding of the Jewish perspective.
Overall, this book will be a worthy addition to the library of anyone of the Judeo-Christian faith.
