Others have nothing to return home to because their beloved country is devastated with half of it in Soviet hands, homes destroyed and families wiped out. Some, such as the V2 rocket engineer Eric Lohmann, have terrible secrets that they have to conceal from the British or face the gallows. Mark Schiller, a Luftwaffe pilot partially blinded when the canopy of his Me262 jet fighter was shattered, has no desire to return home just yet, having learned about the pioneering work of an eye surgeon in London.
