It is in manufactures of iron and steel that the United States is meeting with most success. The chief competing countries are England and Germany, and the progress of the trade has been as shown in the following table (values in United States currency): Average Annual Imports Of Manufactures Of Iron Anj Steel Into Peru From Specified Countries, 1895-1904. For the first period American sales were only two-fifths the amount of England's. They have now risen to three-fourths. The increase in German sales appears abnormally large because of large sales in 1901 and 1902 of guns for the arm'. If this unusual item be omitted, the sales for the period 1900-1904 are reduced to $240,000 per annum. There is scarcely an item in the long list of iron and steel exports from the United States which does not show a satisfactory increase, and our competition seems to be becoming effective all along the line.
