This novel lacks many of the strengths that draw me to CS Forester-- fascinating characters, driving narrative, absorbing historical detail, credible action sequences. As in many of his novels he writes from an idea or premise, but in "Randall" he hits you over the head with it. It's there in the title: "The River of Time." In a nutshell: the course of one's life is influenced by small decisions. If you turn left instead of right, the grenade will miss you. Since you then survive, a German soldier will die the next day. If you sit next to that woman on the bus, you may wind up marrying her. And so on. Randall often marvels that this is the case, and Forester the narrator highlights it over and over again. Three things save the book. First, Forester's prose remains irresistibly intelligent and observant. Second, the plot takes some truly wacky turns I would never have predicted. Third, Forester seems to have written this book, at least in part, as a way of dealing with his own divorce. Food for thought that makes it easy to forgive its shortcomings.
