In the second season of Steve Frank's crime-solving comedy, fake psychic Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and Burton "Gus" Guster (Dulé Hill) are up to their usual investigative antics while they also confront a few personal challenges. Shawn keeps up his psychic ruse as he tackles cases using the acute observational skills his dad Henry (Corbin Bernsen) taught him as a kid, but his scheme is threatened early in the season when a psychic (Bianca Kajlich) working for the Feds becomes determined to proves he's a fake. Gus has several personal crises as he tries to impress his uncle (John Amos) by pretending he's the one with psychic abilities, sets out to clear his parents' names in a murder case, and confronts a woman (Kerry Washington) from his past. Henry continues to disapprove of his son's behavior, but he finds himself drawn into several of Shawn's cases, offering advice and new perspectives, and even goes undercover in a retirement home in one instance. Shawn also has a tenuous working relationship with Det. Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), who looks down on Shawn's methods but nevertheless begins working more cooperatively with him, especially after Shawn goes out on a limb to investigate crimes with a personal connection to Lassiter. Det. Juliet O'Hara (Maggie Lawson), meanwhile, takes steps to advance her career by taking the lead on cases, but it's not always a smooth path. Interim chief Karen Vick (Kirsten Nelson) has her career on her mind as well as she strives for a more permanent position in the department while also navigating her role as a new mom. Notable guest stars in Season 2 include Ernie Hudson and Phylicia Rashad as Gus' parents; Gina Gershon, Tim Curry and Cristián de la Fuente in an American Idol spoof; Lou Diamond Phillips as a federal agent; and Kevin Sorbo as a bounty hunter.
