They have also exposed a good deal of repertory that has often been played in Russia -- at least once it was rehabilitated from Stalin's depredations -- but ignored in the West. Examples are quite a few of the 27 symphonies of Nikolai Myaskovsky, which were quite frequently played in the U.S. in the 1930s and 1940s (Chicago Symphony Orchestra conductor Frederick Stock was a particular champion), but rarely anywhere but Russia these days. Here, as he did on his earlier recording of the Prokofiev Symphony No. 5, Petrenko pairs Prokofiev with Myaskovsky; this time, it is the Prokofiev Symphony No. 6 in E flat minor, Op. 111, with Myaskovsky's Symphony No. 27 in C minor, Op. 85.
