The person for whom the book was bought has not yet read it. These comments relate to the film version which influenced the book-purchase. ...A New York artist down on his luck meets in the park a young girl who seems from another time. Is the girl actual, or his fantasy? Certain clues suggest the former - but in the past.... He meets her again, older, and paints her portrait; his luck changes, and he (of course) falls in love with her; and she with him; but she is as elusive as ever.... In a dramatic climax, he goes to meet her at a remote lighthouse in the middle of a raging storm.....Enough. You must read the book/see the film for yourself. If the book is as good as its cinematic counterpart, my friend has a treat in store: a moody, moving, mysterious and mystical tale spanning time and the extra-temporal.

An interesting story
I first read this book as a young teenager, and it made such an impression on me that I wanted to find it for my daughter. As an adult I still found the story enjoyable. The characters are well-drawn and engaging. The story line is a bit predictable, but it's a great rainy day read.
