At its worst, the grindcore genre could be described as "extremity for extremity's sake," with anything of true substance or artistic value subjugated to the sheer thrill of shocking the listener within an inch of his or her sanity. Which isn't to say that Incarnated's intentionally vile brand of unforgiving grindcore was conceived exclusively with that somewhat misguided philosophy in mind (especially since they don't even consider themselves a grindcore act, but rather a "pure" death metal band in the early Swedish tradition -- whatever!), but it comes suspiciously close. Members of a surprisingly large generation of Polish grinders, Incarnated are hooked on endlessly revolving riffs, skittish percussion, and incomprehensible croaks for vocals; they do write unusually long songs for the style (see death metal claims above), yet it's a very rare occurrence when their qualities justify their lengths (see the standout "Disturbance of Consciousness," for instance). It also makes one wonder if this helpless repetition of the same old formulas isn't the cause behind their very sporadic output -- mostly confined to singles and any number of mini-releases -- and this being only their second full album in 15 years of existence. In any case, if the "extremity for extremity's sake" motto actually appeals to your metal sensibilities (and why the hell not?), Pleasure of Consumption is exactly what the butcher ordered -- dig in!
