It created controversies for years and still sounded fresh almost up to Mozart's time, for it created some of the musical language we now know as opera buffa. Originally an intermezzo presented between acts of a serious opera, it's in two short acts, about 45 minutes long in total, and it essentially has just two characters. Modest dimensions are the key to its successful realization, and this little 1996 recording is the perfect size. The two singers, Patrick Donnelly as Uberto and Christine Bunning as the servant girl Serpina, enjoy what they're doing, actually sound like they're laughing when the music calls for them to laugh, and never drop the work's perfect momentum. They are accompanied by period-instrument string players, including Pavlo Besnosiuk on first violin, who are brisk but never edgy.
