Seller's Description:
Near Fine. First printing stated. Overszied in illustrated glossy softcovers. 93 pp. with bibliofgraphy, index. Illustrated with vintage photography and reproductions and with drawings. Near fine, with just a touch of use at the outer tips. The New Jersey shore town of Ocean City, south of Atlantic City, was originally known as Peck's Beach. In prehistoric days, the Lenni Lenape Native American suv-tribe the Tuckahoe would, during the summer season, cross the bay to the island later named Peck's Beach, for fishing, crabbing, and shellfish gathering. It was first described by Dutch explorer David Pieterzen DeVrise and in 1695 it was surveyed by John Budd and in the same year was acquired by Pennsyvanian John Somers. In the early 18th century cattle and hogs were transported to the island which, thanks to its being surrounded by water, made it an ideal grazing site. in the 1850s, a marine insurance company agent, Parker Miller, settled on Peck's Beach island with his wife and six childre, making him the first known year-round resident. In 1879, a group of Methodist ministers resolved to build a Christian resort called Ocean City, in imitaion of the similar resort of Ocean Grove to the north (Ocean City is still today a "dry town"). Over the decades, Ocean City became a popular summer tourist resort. Into the 20th century, a boardwalk was built as was an amusement pier.
