Where's the data? If you enjoy concept books, this book is great. From novel solutions to how and why it works. Knowing or having exposure to HVAC (heating, ventilating, air-conditioning is a definite plus. I enjoyed this book and look forward to making it real.
Perhaps Revision 3 will include more data from the 30 years experience with all those temperature and humidity sensors left in the ground collecting data. Case studies of existing buildings over time to know how they performed. The next revision.
While this book can serve the prepers, the DIY, the you-can-do-it folk bring along some seasoned builder-engineer types who know which materials perform best and not go for the 6 mil Visqueen (plastic) vapor barrier which will be shreded in a few years to diminish thermal performance. Roll out rubber may be a better choice for a vapor barrier. Earthship and engineered house construction can also benefit from this book.
I really liked this book; it read well, the concepts are practical and useful provided they are implemented well with applied thought and some experience along the way. If you want to take earth bermed and underground construction to extreme efficiency, this is the book for you.
Passive annual heat storage (PAHS) is a building concept theorized to create a year-round constant temperature in an earth shelter by means of passive solar heating and a thermal battery effect lasting several months. It is claimed that an earth shelter designed according to PAHS principles would store the Sun's heat in the summer and release it slowly over the winter months without need for other forms of heating.
