After all, only one of the three works on the album is French, Ernest Chausson's Poème, Op. 25, but there's more, of course, to Paris than just French music. Things get off to a superb start with Poème, a work written for Eugène Ysaÿe, of whom Hahn was the last student of his last student. She must have played the work hundreds of times, and her performance is, in a word, flawless, but the high pitch is maintained over the rest of the fairly short (52 minutes) but complete-in-itself program. The connection of Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1 in D major, Op. 19, to Paris is that the work was premiered there in 1923, after spending years being carted around in the composer's luggage after he fled the chaos of the Bolshevik takeover and the instability that followed.
