Don Eppes (Rob Morrow), an FBI agent in Los Angeles who heads the Bureau's Violent Crimes Squad, teams with his mathematical genius brother Charlie (David Krumholtz), a professor at the California Institute of Science, to solve crimes in this brainy procedural created by Nicolas Falacci and Cheryl Heuton. Two of the show's executive producers are brothers Ridley and Tony Scott. Don's FBI team includes forensic psychologist Terry Lake (Sabrina Lloyd) and newly assigned agent David Sinclair (Alimi Ballard). When a serial rapist terrorizes L.A., Charlie proves math can be successfully employed to help investigate criminal cases by pinpointing the suspect's point of origin using a mathematical equation based on the various crime-scene locations. Don, initially skeptical of his brother's claims, is impressed. But not all goes smoothly for Charlie as he begins to divide his time between teaching and crime solving. In one case, Charlie accurately predicts where a band of bank robbers will strike next, but when Don and his team confront them a massive shootout occurs and four people, including an officer, are killed. The outcome disturbs Charlie and he retreats into the family garage to work on an unsolvable math problem that he also plunged into after his mother became ill and died. Charlie is encouraged in his teaching career and his FBI work by close friend and fellow professor Larry Fleinhardt (Peter MacNicol) and doctoral student Amita Ramanujan (Navi Rawat), who likes Charlie. The brothers each confide in their recently widowed dad Alan (Judd Hirsch), with whom Charlie lives. In a counterfeiting case, Don is reunited with former lover Kim (Sarah Wayne Callies), a Secret Service agent assigned to the investigation. And in a probe involving a sniper who goes on a shooting spree and randomly kills several people, Don brings in the FBI's leading sniper-expert agent Ian Edgerton (Lou Diamond Phillips), who routinely helps with cases.
